The summer brought some changes to the Gregory-Portland Wildcats’ coaching staff.

The Wildcats had to make changes on their baseball staff after Head Coach Fred Flores stepped down, citing philosophy differences. He will be replaced by assistant coach Kehr Schulz, who will take on his first head coaching job.

Schulz, who will begin his seventh year on the G-P baseball staff this upcoming season, pitched for Calallen before going on to pitch at St. Mary’s University. He was an all-state selection at pitcher in high school and an All-Region pitcher for St. Mary’s.

“I had six great seasons working under Coach Flores, the direction we wanted to go from day one of my getting to Gregory- Portland,” Schultz said. “The hard work and commitment any successful program requires really began to take shape in recent years. With the help of my assistant coaches, I aim to build on those improvements and move this baseball program forward.”

Joining Schulz on his staff will be Brian Flack, who was the head coach of the Port Aransas baseball team for the last seven years.

Earlier in the summer, Athletic Director Matt Anastasio named current G-P coach Richard Ouellette as the football team’s new defensive coordinator and Andy Smith as the football team’s new offensive coordinator. Smith will also take over duties as the boys’ track coach, while Ram Lopez, who previously led the track team, was named the new boys’ powerlifting coach.

Justin Bell was named the new coach for the girls’ powerlifting team, Mike Garcia is now the assistant boys’ track coach, and Alicia Hall was named assistant girls’ coach in basketball and track.
