REFUGIO COUNTY – A Victoria man died in a head-on collision at about 4 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, a little more than two miles south of Refugio.

Hector Valderaz, 56, formerly of Refugio, was an employee of Union Pacific Railroad.

He was driving a 2012 Mazda M31 southbound on Farm-to-Market Road 2678 when his vehicle was hit.

Valderaz was taken to Moore’s Funeral Home in Refugio.

Breanna Gean Collins, 26, also of Victoria, was headed northbound on Farm-to-Market Road 2678 when her vehicle veered over into the southbound lanes, according to Department of Pubic Safety Cpl. Charlie Ramirez.

Collins’ 2004 Nissan Xterra hit Valderaz's vehicle head on.

Ramirez said the cause of the accident was driver fatigue.

Collins was taken to Refugio County Memorial Hospital with incapacitating injuries but in stable condition.

Collins’ car came to a rest on the driver’s side, facing south in the bar ditch, east of the roadway.

Valderaz's Mazda came to rest, facing south in the bar ditch, west of the roadway.

Valderaz was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Lorraine Lopez at 4:53 a.m.

In addition to DPS troopers, the Refugio County Sheriff’s Office deputies, medical techs and the Refugio Fire Department assisted at the scene.
