About 45 Scouts participated in ground and flight school at the airport Sunday morning, Jan. 19. Scouts Niki Kumar, Matt Kearney and Matthew Wattana ready for a flight in a Cessna single engine aircraft. The Scouts from Austin were taken on flights in the Cessna, a Bell 47 helicopter and a glider at the Refugio County Rooke Airport.

Boy Scout Troop 990 from Austin brought 45 scouts down for a campout on the Rooke Ranch. Forty scouts earned their Aviation Merit Badge and in the process took flights in a Cessna 172 (45 Scouts in 15 flights, 3 per flight), a Bell 47 helicopter (25 Scouts in 25 flights), and a Schweizer 2-33 sailplane (23 Scouts in 23 flights). Each of the scouts were even given the opportunity to operate the controls of the aircraft, under the supervision of the seasoned instructors. The scouts also took part in a ground school, which covered other aspects of flight and aviation opportunities.
