CUERO – The Lady Cat junior varsity volleyball squad gained experience and a win at the recent Lady Gobbler tournament.

The S-T girls met the Poteet girls on the court in their first tournament contest.

The young Lady Cats defeated the Lady Aggies in two straight, 25-20 and 25-8. Andrea Leal served for seven points in the first set to help get the win, and Amber Gutierrez helped put nine points up in the second set off her service game.

The Lady Cats then faced off against St. Paul and lost in three sets.

The S-T girls started strong and captured the first set 25-21 in a close struggle. The St. Paul girls put together a few runs to win set two 25-12 and then won the race to 15 points in the deciding third set, 15-8. Gutierrez again served well for the Lady Cats, and she got some help from Giselle Sarate.

The third match in the tournament was for third place, and the Lady Cats were on the court with Nixon-Smiley. It went all three sets to determine a winner, and the Lady Mustangs prevailed in a close match.

The S-T girls captured the first set 25-23 in a thriller. Set two was also close, but the N-S squad pulled out a 25-20 win to event the match at 1-1. The race to 15 points in the final set was also tight, but the Lady Mustangs got the last few points to ease to a 15-11 victory.

“The Lady Cats played very well throughout the whole tournament but came up short in the match for third place,” said JV coach Holly Vasquez.

The JV girls played San Diego on Tuesday night this week.
