Bee and Live Oak County residents may have been surprised to see a familiar name/face among the Extraordinary Texans listed in the September issue of Texas Highways magazine.

Loncito Cartwright, 53, was among the eight people profiled for accomplishing extraordinary things as individuals helping make Texas special.

The story (with large photograph) mentioned that the Cartwrights came to East Texas in the 1820s, and in 1915, the family acquired land near Dinero and named it the Twin Oaks Ranch.

“During the past decade, Cartwright has steered the 6,000-acre cattle operation in a new direction – raising grass-fed, hormone-free and antibiotic-free lamb.”

The son of Lon Cartwright and the late Mrs. Cartwright, Loncito, a Texas A&M graduate, said, “Irish settlers came to South Texas in the 19th century and raised sheep, so I’m returning to the past in many ways.”

Nowadays, he raises a herd of 600 sheep and sells “Loncito’s Lamb” to restaurants and consumers in South and Central Texas. Also, he has added free-range swine (including some wild hogs) to the ranch and menu.

The article noted that diners can find Cartwright’s lamb and pork products at nice restaurants in cities such as San Antonio, Austin, Fredericksburg and Port Aransas.

“I know our animals are happier roaming free,” the sixth-generation Texan said, adding that he’s thrilled to make friends with the people who buy food produced on his family’s land.
