BEEVILLE – The Rialto Theater has announced that it will conduct the annual Children’s Summer Theater Workshop July 29-Aug. 3, from 9 a.m. to noon each day, for ages 6-15. A registration fee of $50 will be required for each participant.

Phyllis Garcia will be guest workshop teacher. The workshop will be conducted in downtown Beeville at 118 N. Washington St., the Rialto Theater Annex building, next to the Rialto Theater.

Garcia received a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Sul Ross State University. She is currently the speech and drama instructor at Coastal Bend College, where has taught for six years. She has been the director of numerous productions at the college, such as the musicals “Oklahoma,” “The Sound of Music” and “Once Upon a Mattress.” Her drama and acting students have presented such plays as “Dining Room,” “Murder Inn,” “Murder You Must Be Kidding” and several children’s plays such as “Telling Tales Again Sam” and “Doc, Doc,…Goose.”

Victoria Ramirez will be Garcia’s student assistant. She has been in several CBC productions, such as a “Night of Readers’ Theatre,” “Murder Inn” and “Murder You Must Be Kidding.”

The Children’s Theater Workshop will be designed to build self-confidence on the stage. The children will learn some of the basic principles of the theater such as positions of the stage, body positions, projection of the voice, pronunciation and body language. The students also will be instructed on simple makeup and costume design.

The workshop will also emphasize the importance of teamwork and working as a group as they begin each day with theater exercises and warm-ups. The student participants will be presented in a free program demonstrating their accomplishments on Saturday, Aug. 3, at 11 a.m. for family and friends.

Registration forms for the Children’s Workshop may be picked up at Hogue’s Jewelry, 202 N. Washington St. in Beeville. For more information, call Mark Parsons at 361-358-3859 or Dr. James Lee at 361-358-6337.

This week of the Rialto Theater Children’s Workshop has been partially funded by the Joe Barnhart Foundation.
