GEORGE WEST – The game of baseball breaks down to pitching, defense and hitting, and the Beeville Major boys All-Stars put all three aspects of the game on display on Saturday night.

The Beeville boys were impressive in their 7-0 victory over the Orange Grove Bulldogs in the first round of their postseason tournament.

It took a couple of innings for the Beeville bats to get into the swing of things. In the third, the Major All-Stars struck for three runs as Jesse Ramirez, Lauro Garcia Jr., Derek Castillo and Seth Gomez all recorded base hits. Castillo and Gomez pounded out doubles to help the Beeville scoring brigade. Ramirez, Garcia and Castillo all scored for the hometown heroes.

In the next inning, the Beeville boys added another three runs. Andrew Wessels, Domingo Maturey and Garcia all scored, and the big hit was a two-run single off the bat of Castillo.

Anthony Pena started on the mound for Beeville and cruised through the first three innings with six strikeouts and no hits. Joaquin Garcia relieved him in the fourth and did not allow a run. Pablo Salinas finished with two innings of perfect relief, striking out six of the seven Orange Grove batters faced.

In all, the Beeville pitching struck out 12 Bulldogs and gave up just two hits and two walks on the night. The defense played well, producing two double plays to keep the Bulldogs on a short leash.

The final score for Beeville came in the top of the fifth. Eric Valdez Jr. led off the inning and took the first pitch he saw deep into the night and over the center field fence for a solo home run.

The Beeville boys were rained out on Sunday but played the host George West Longhorns on Monday night. Look for that game summary in today’s edition.
