Five boys and a girl will represent the Badgers and Lady Badgers at the State Track and Field Meet in Austin on May 10-11. The boys’ team finished the Region IV-2A Meet Saturday 2nd overall to East Bernard and just ahead of Rice Consolidated.

“This has been a very successful season with many records broken and tons of improvement on times and distances,” Coach Donnie Dziuk said. “These kids work hard – boys and girls – and earned every honor they received.”

The Sprint Relay team of Philip Vaughan, Paul Kinney, Dontrell “D.T” Lyons and Kenneth “K.D.” Glenn beat their own school record, improving to a new time of 42.52, to take the Regional championship. The same boys also won the 800 M. Relay.

But the meet was bittersweet for Vaughan, a senior, who had the lead but fell on a hurdle during the 110 M. Hurdles. Vaughan placed 1st during the Regional Qualifiers Meet a week before.

“Philip’s unfortunate crash was devastating,” Dziuk said. “He works hard on the hurdles, and I know he would have done well at State. It really hurts that the best hurdler in this region is not moving on.”

Boys Results:

400 M Relay: Philip Vaughan, Paul Kinney, Dontrell Lyons, Kenneth Glenn, 1st  **School Record 42.52**

800 M Relay: Philip Vaughan, Paul Kinney, Kenneth Glenn, Dontrell Lyons, 1st

200 M Dash: Dontrell Lyons, 1st   Paul Kinney, 3rd

Pole Vault: Garrett Willett, 2nd

Girls

400 M Dash: Katy Gotthardt, 2nd

Also competing at the Regional Meet were Zack Pawelek at Shot, Kinney at Triple Jump, Lyons at Long Jump, Dylan Wright at the 300 M. Hurdles, Collin Lybarger in the 400 M. Run, Patricia Lara in the 400 M. Run, Jordan Garcez at the 800 M. Run and the Lady Badgers’ 800 M. Relay team of JuliAnn Chesser, Caley Jackson, Alex Benavides and Gotthardt.

“This year’s underclassmen have had success as well, and I believe they will be successful in the future,” Dziuk said. “They have some big shoes to fill.”
