The posts and railing that were placed at the sloughs south of Bayside proved themselves to be a death trap this past week as feared by many locals.
The railing leaves no room to escape an oncoming car if someone crosses the center stripe on the curve.
There have been wrecks in the past at this location, but in most instances, the cars landed in the water or the marsh with no fatalities.
Also, this is a farm-to-market road, and farm equipment cannot travel between the railings without law enforcement stopping traffic or taking a major risk to others if they do not.
I realize that it was dangerous before with people crossing from one side to the other while fishing or catching bait. People still do this, but now they must climb the barrier to cross the road, making it even more dangerous.
This area was one of the last public access areas for fishing, crabbing and bait catching in the country.
I will concede the fact that people left lots of trash in the area, but there has to be a better solution than creating the “death trap” that is now there.
