Runge plans big bash: Saturday’s Independence Celebration brings food, fun and fireworks

Although it usually doesn’t happen on the 4th of July, the spirit is just the same.

The small south Texas town of Runge celebrates Independence Day each year in a very big way with a Saturday celebration that brings patriotic pride and hometown flavor to the east side of Karnes County.

This year’s celebration is happening this Saturday, July 2.

Vendors open at 10 a.m. at the VFW grounds in Runge and at 10:30 a.m. there is a pie contest, home run derby, dunk tank, horseshoe tournament and .22 shooting contest.

From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. there will be a car and tractor show and face painting.

BBQ will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. during the silent auction and raffle.

Kids games, clowns and ballons will befeatured from 1:30 - 3 p.m.

Vicki Cross will perform country music from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Air Force Band of the West will perform a jazz concert from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

At 6 p.m. is the Independence Celebration Parade which will pass through downtown Runge.

Dirty Texas featuring Ben Farias will perform music from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Fireworks will light up the night sky at 9:30 p.m.
