The GW Longhorn basketball squad is determined to find their way into the playoff hunt.

In the last four games, they have managed to rack up a 3-1 record, with that single loss coming off an exciting overtime thriller that saw the ‘Horns come from behind, and their opponent, San Diego, make a last-second three-point shot to send the game into overtime.

Since that loss on Jan. 28, the ‘Horns upped their play and avenged an earlier district loss to Odem to handily beat them at home, 57-47 on Jan. 31.

They traveled to Skidmore-Tynan Feb. 4 and were again victorious, 71-53. Scoring was as follows: J. Blevens with 18, K. Mircovich with 15, M. Moore & M. Martinez with eight each, J. Ferrell with seven, G. Feist with six, D. Rhodes with four, W. Wasicek with two, and M. Ellett with one.

Next up, the team hosted Taft, who holds sole possession of first place in the district, on Feb. 7.

The ’Horns knew the importance of this game and came out ready to play. After two quarters, the ‘Horns were up, 30-18. Although Taft attempted a comeback by outscoring GW in the last quarter, it wasn’t enough and the ‘Horns walked away with the win, 60-52.

Coach Alvarez was satisfied with the intensity his players brought and he was very proud of the team effort.

The high scorer was Josey Blevens with 24 points. Other players contributing were Jeremiah Ferrell with 14, Kody Mircovich with 10, Matt Martinez, Mason Moore and Hunter Pipkin with four each, and Darren Rhodes with two. The ‘Horns will close out their regular season in Freer on Feb. 11.

The team invites everyone out to show their support. Hook ’em, ’Horns!
