THREE RIVERS – Roughly nine months ago, it was feared that Salsa Fest—that magnificent conga line of hot sauce aficionados vying to be crowned king of the salsa chefs—might come to an end.

But last week, Murrell Foster, executive director of the Three Rivers Chamber of Commerce, announced the event is expected to return with a bang this year.

The city of Three Rivers has formally assumed responsibility and conversations—while still in progress—are revolving around a combination Salsa Fest and Fourth of July fireworks display, Foster said.

As the change might suggest, the event in this case would move from April to July 4 or so, and its new home would be the Hilbert H. Kopplin Memorial Park.

A city official could not be immediately reached to elaborate on the event’s change of hands. Three Rivers Mayor Sam Garcia also could not be reached to comment.

Salsa Fest officials from the past will still be on hand to offer free advice, free information, and a general dose of enthusiasm for the event, Foster said.

“Right now, they are talking about combining the events, but my real worry is about the heat that time of year,” he said. “It could be very hot. We really lucked out having such a beautiful night last year, but you never know.”

The event, described as the signature spring festival of Three Rivers, seemed doomed those months ago after the chamber decided to no longer organize the vendors and performances, and First National Bank decided to end its seven-year run of operating the salsa competition.

The festival will be roughly 15 years old this year, but the number of volunteers has steadily declined, feeding speculation it was on its last legs.

But, apparently, it’s not!

“Believe it or not, Salsa Fest is still alive,” Foster said.
