Deep in the brush country between San Antonio and Corpus Christi are two living history sites, one representing an 18th century Spanish mission and the other an Old West town similar to Lonesome Dove village made famous in Larry McMurtry’s novel of the same name.

Both sites have been permanently recreated, with meticulous attention to detail, by the landowners with the intention of making these unique venues available for family reunions, weddings, special events, corporate retreats and as lodging for hunters. One is Mission Sin Caja in Live Oak County and the other is Lonesome Dove Village in McMullen County.

On January 21, the Texas Tropical Trail Region heritage tourism program will offer a real time travel experience event, complete with historical re-enactors, at these sites to celebrate the program’s 100th monthly history & culture event, and the public is invited.

Real stories will come alive at the mission just west of Three Rivers and at Lonesome Dove Village just north of Tilden. At Mission Sin Caja, you will be able to “meet” the late J. Frank Dobie plus some of the characters from his 1930 book, “Coronado’s Children”, including the builder of the 18th century Fort/Mission Ramirez, Don Jose Antonio Ramirez.

Later in the day at Lonesome Dove Village, you will also “meet” some of the folks buried at Boot Hill Cemetery in Dogtown (present-day Tilden).

Two charter buses will transport the time travelers to these living history events; also included will be refreshments and a hot lunch. Cost per person will be only $20 for lunch and includes special commemorative keepsakes. Bus transportation is free, and all attendees must ride the buses.

One bus will leave the Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum in Harlingen at 6:00 am and return to the Museum at 7:00 pm. The second bus will leave Three Rivers at 9:00 am and return at 4:00 pm.

Payments and reservations must be received by Friday, January 3. Make your $20 check payable to Texas Tropical Trail and mail to 295 Lakeshore Drive, Sandia TX 78363.
