The Garden Club met at Our Savior Lutheran Church for their monthly meeting on Oct. 28. Hostesses were Patty Barton, Lillie Mae Wieding and Melba Wolff.

After sack lunches and socializing, President Judy Weber held a short meeting. Meeting highlights are as follows:

Members brought pumpkins for our yearly pumpkin painting project, which was held the next day, Oct. 29, at the Three Rivers Nursing Home. Members, Dorene Elliott and Della Hicks, guided nursing home residents in decorating pumpkins for a little Halloween fun and fellowship. The afternoon was enjoyed by all.

An important topic of discussion was plans for this year’s 23rd annual Christmas Tree Forest.

All individuals, groups, businesses, schools and Garden Club members are encouraged to participate by bringing a decorated Christmas tree to be displayed at the First State Bank in Three Rivers, during the Christmas holiday season. Participants may bring in their trees, starting the day after Thanksgiving, on Nov. 29, and will accept entries no later than Dec. 13.

Cans will be placed in front of each tree for the public to ‘vote’ on their favorite tree by monetary donations. The winner will be announced in The Progress. All donations will go to the Boys and Girls Club.

After the meeting, members were treated to a tour of the beautiful new Three Rivers High School, led by School Principal, Mr. Charles Odem.

For our November meeting, the Garden Club will have a very special speaker, Mrs. Betty Awbrey, from Fair Oaks Ranch.

Awbrey is the author of Why Stop? – A Guide to Texas Historical Roadside Markers, and she will present her recently updated edition of the book.

This meeting is open to anyone interested in attending on Nov. 18 at 6 p.m., at the Our Savior Lutheran Church in Three Rivers.
