The George West Athletic Booster Club was on the verge of dissolving, but a burst of volunteerism within the community reignited the club on July 17.

“We’re used to getting three people per meeting, so the 27 was a big difference,” club president Marcus Lane said. “I started as a merchandiser a year ago, and when I started there wasn’t much help.”

Lane said he thought the reason participation dwindled with the boosters was because the public might not be completely familiar with what the club does or how anyone can get involved.

The boosters raise funds throughout the year by selling GW merchandise and promote all sporting events to try to get as many people to attend as possible. Lane said they support and promote everything from powerlifting to football and volleyball. The club also tries to fulfill coaches needs such as getting iPads for the volleyball coach to use on the sidelines.

Although volunteers were in short supply, donations are not. The club’s budget was $11,950 as of July 17, compared to about $5,000 last year, Lane said during last week’s meeting.

In an effort to increase sponsorships, the club changed its levels for sponsorship options. Bronze sponsorships for $100-299 get a letter of appreciation and GW decal, silver sponsorships of $300-499 get a certificate, letter of appreciation and GW decal. Gold sponsorships for $500-699 get a certificate, letter of appreciation, GW decal, flag and their name on the booster’s banner. Platinum and ultimate sponsorships get all of the previously listed items along with two Longhorn or Ladyhorn shirts for platinum sponsorships and four shirts for ultimate sponsorships. Platinum sponsorships are between $700-899 and ultimate sponsorships are for over $900.

Donations can also be made for smaller amounts. But, money isn’t the only way to help support GW athletics since booster club membership is free and having an enrolled student is not required.

The club is still looking to fill their vice president, co-merchandiser and reporter positions.

“I’m a George West alumni, and I’m back in town working in George West, so I figured why not help? I’m there anyway,” Lane said. “I don’t have any kids, and if you’re parents then that’s great, but you can be just a fan to join.”

This year’s blue and white scrimmage night is set for Aug. 10. Then on the day before school starts, Sunday, Aug. 25. The boosters are hosting an ice cream social for the community to meet the Longhorns, Ladyhorns, coaches and new teachers. Lane said they did the same thing last year, and it went well, but this year’s will hopefully also include the high school band and cheerleaders.

To get involved, contact Lane at marcuslane0058@yahoo.com or attend the next booster club meeting on Aug. 7 at George West ISD cafeteria.

Lane said the boosters welcome new volunteers and that more information can also be found on their Facebook page, www.facebook.com/georgewestlonghorns.
