The smell of hot dogs and sausages grilling filled the air as a 10-foot tall, star-spangled eagle stood outside of George West City Hall on July 3 for the third annual Independence Day cookout.

The city of George West provided 250 hot dogs, 150 sausages, chips and soda for free to the public the day before the Fourth of July since offices are closed for the day.

Council members Ralph Lopez, Chuck Pawelek and Louis Salinas grilled throughout the afternoon in Salinas’ food cart with Mayor Sylvia Steele, and George West High School students Avery Pawelek and Mikey Palacios pitched in along with seven-year-old Caiden Salinas.

“We do it to show we’re very patriotic,” Steele said.
