Thurman Eli “Pete” Oler, 76, of Swinney Switch, died surrounded by his family on Friday, June 28, 2013.

Mr. Oler was born May 9, 1937, in Dimmitt to James and Ruby Oler. He graduated from Happy Texas High School and later attended Bee County College. He married Lonnie Marie on July 26, 1965, in Corpus Christi and served in the U.S. Navy as a radio technician for 20 years. After retiring from the Navy, he worked at Bee County College/Coastal Bend College as an automotive instructor for 20 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Ruby Oler; brothers, Jack Oler, Norman Oler and Dub Oler; and a sister, Audrey Oler.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Lonnie Marie; his children, Carrie Knight of Spring, Tammy Oler of Swinney Switch, Buster Oler of Needville and Debbie (Joe) Billingsley of Lytle; grandchildren, Travis Cain, Alysha Oler, Shelby Galarneau, Tyler Cain, Nexpa Galarneau, Hannah Oler, and Damon and Ayla Leonard; a sister, Norma Jean (Billy) King; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, at Dobie Funeral Home in Mathis. The family gathered with friends at Swinney Switch Volunteer Fire Department following the service.

Pete, thank you for all the grand meals you prepared at the lake and the Scott Ranch. The memories I have growing up next door and hunting are numerous. You will be sorely missed, but never forgotten ! Thanks for helping and taking care of my Father, I will always be grateful.

You are a good man Pete, and tell my Dad hello for me. I know he was waiting for you at the gates of Heaven. My thoughts and prayers are with the Oler Family.
