The McMullen County Cowgirls went 1-1 this past weekend defeating CC College Prep on Jan. 29 (74-15) while losing to San Perlita (48-44) on Feb. 1.

“We still have one game left to play in District and the loss to San Perlita pretty much sews up the District Championship for them,” Coach Tony Taylor said. “They have CCCP left, and we travel to San Isidro. If we take care of business, we will finish second in District.”

Scoring in the CCCP was Jordan Stephenson-18, Danielle Dawson and Jasmyn Smith-14, Destinee Thomas- 10, Heather Gillin-7, Ashley Zetsche-6, Sarita Cavazos-5

Scoring in the San Perlita game was Destinee Thomas-15, Hailey Ruiz and Danielle Dawson-10, Jasmyn Smith-4, Sarita Cavazos and Jordan Stephenson-2, Heather Gillin-1.

The Cowgirls were up by eight during the game against San Perlita game with a little over two minutes left but couldn’t hold on.

“The thing that killed us all night was fouling, we put them on the line 38 times and they made 19- in the fourth quarter alone they attempted 16 freethrows,” Taylor said. “We reached all night and didn’t move our feet. We’ve played good defense all year but last Friday night wasn’t one of our best efforts.”

Taylor congratulated San Perlita on a game well played.

“Hats off to them,” he said. “I never, ever want to lose a game but if there is a bit of a silver lining it is that if we can close out District with a win then we will go as the number two seed.”

Taylor considered the The matchups as the two seed are more favorable for his team.

“We still have to show up and play and not foul,” he said. “We had great effort the other night it just wasn’t ‘smart’ effort.”

The loss last Friday cost the Cowgirls the District Title and it was especially hard on them with the game being on their home court.

“We’ll regroup and go back to work. This is the fun time of they year,” Taylor said. “Get in the DANCE and then SURVIVE and ADVANCE!!! We’ve got our dancing shoes ready we’re just ready to get our ticket for the dance and hopefully we’ll take care of business at San Isidro.”

The San Isidro game took place in San Isidro on Feb. 5, but, as of press time, scores from that game were not available.

See next week’s edition of the paper for a recap on that game.
