The George West Longhorn football team had another great football season in 2012, winning the district championship. There are so many things that go in to making any season successful, and I would like to take a few minutes to recognize some special people and to say “thank you.”
First, I would like to recognize our kids. George West played with the best group of senior leaders that I have seen in a long time. The Longhorns received great leadership both in the classroom and on the field from our six elected senior captains, Bobby Torres, Brady Jones, Robert Rutledge, Anderson Daniels, Lucas Barcak and Jesse Haros.
Other seniors who did a great job on this year’s team were Jacob Almaguer, Bryan Chessar, Joseph Fiest, Andrew Katzfey, Zack Moreno, Quest Newberry, Enrique Nieto and Hudson Wallace.
Several of these young men are also some of the best performing academic students in our school as well as great athletes.
The 2012 championship team never had everyone on the team healthy at the same time, but they played through it with poise and class, and showed the tireless effort that resulted in yet another championship season.
All of us could learn from their diligence in the face of adversity. From the off-season weight program, to 7-on-7, to the summer program, the kids gave an effort that directly resulted in how the season turned out.
It was an honor coaching them. This team will graduate with four district titles in four years and with a 23-1 district record.
It is not an accident that they were so successful, they worked for it, from the beginning of off-season to the end of the season, they earned it. We are proud of them.
Parents, your constant support was greatly appreciated. From the early morning drives to and from practice starting in the seventh grade, to the emotional support after the tough days, to the constant encouragement, to the support on homework. Your constant support was appreciated.
What you do reflects so much community pride in George West. Way to go parents! Thank you for being there.
For every Thursday night pre-game meal, there was a never-ending supply of spaghetti. Thank you, Julie and Harvey Hardwick, for having the kids in your home.
For road trips, there were always plenty of sandwiches, snacks and drinks for the kids, prepared with all the love and tireless effort that only the football moms could provide. Thank you Edie Katzfey and the rest of the football moms for your support.
On the long weekends preparing for games, there was always a warm home-cooked meal prepared by the football parents, for the coaches, that always made us feel like our efforts were appreciated. It made every person on our staff thankful and appreciative of the opportunity to coach your kids in such a great small town.
Elizabeth Ham did a great job helping with our bulletin boards over the past two years. Thank you so much.
The George West High School teachers are awesome. I want to thank you for the daily tutorials and consistent effort you make for our kids. Our kids are students first, and you are the ones who bring about success in the classroom. Thank you for all you do for our kids.
The George West High School Band did another great job again this year. Thank you for the great job you did at all of the parades, pep-rallies and games. We appreciate your support. Band Director Juan Rodriguez was extremely supportive and we appreciate his leadership. Congratulations on another fine year.
The George West High School cheerleaders were always there to support the Longhorns and Ladyhorns. Even when our play was not consistent, your support was. You are greatly appreciated. Thank you.
The support of the GW administration and school board is awesome. We appreciate you. Thank you for the opportunity that we all have to be here and work with the kids in George West. We are so blessed to be a part of you.
I also would like to thank everyone who financially supported the Longhorns through our annual calendar poster. Through your contributions, we are able to do things for kids that we would never have been able to do otherwise.
The last thing that I would like to do is to thank everyone for the opportunity that my family has had to live and work in George West. Since this is my final year here as athletic director and head football coach, I just wanted to say thank you to the people who have allowed me to coach your kids. I wanted to tell you that it has been an honor and a blessing in my life. I love you all, and I wish you the best. God bless! Go Horns!
