Students qualify for 2013 District 12 4-H Food Show and Food Challenge

Live Oak had a great group of youth that traveled to Laredo for the 2013 District 12 4-H Food Show and Food Challenge to compete with their winning dishes from the county competition held in October. We had Holly Kopplin in the Senior- Protein division, who prepared Amazing Holiday Muffin Cups and received a Blue Ribbon.

In the Intermediate Protein division, Pacen Wieding prepared a delicious Black-Eyed Pea and Black Bean Salad/Salsa.

Victoria Culpepper in the Fruits and Vegetables Senior division, prepared a Pumpkin Almond Bisque, receiving a Blue Ribbon, and was also the Top Chef Runner-Up of her category.

In Grains Intermediate division, Nathan Culpepper made Pumpkin Swirl Bread and received a Red Ribbon, Baylea Herring in the Senior Dairy Division prepared Holiday Corn Dip and received a Red Ribbon.

Dylan Pawlik in the Intermediate Dairy made Holiday Baked Spinach Artichoke Yogurt Dip, and received a Red Ribbon.

These participants worked extremely hard to get to the District level of competition. These youth not only select and prepare these healthy dishes, they also have to learn where they fit in MyPlate, the nutrients they receive from their dish and how that affects their body, and food safety when preparing their dish. Live Oak County is very proud of these youth.

Live Oak County had two hardworking Food Challenge Teams make it to the 2013 District 12 Food Challenge in Laredo.

The Intermediate team consisted of Dylan Pawlik, Dawson Bednorz, Pacen Wieding and Nathan Culpepper.

The Senior team consisted of Holly Kopplin, Baylea Herring and Victoria Culpepper.

In the food challenge competition, the teams are given a bag with ingredients, and just a hint of what they are supposed to do with those ingredients. Each team takes a large container containing all of the utensils and equipment the teams would need to prepare a dish. The teams are given 40 minutes to prepare a dish, and their presentation to the judges, as well as clean up their area, all within that 40 minutes. After the 40 minutes is complete, they go to the judges, and tell them what it is that they prepared with their ingredients, and give the judges information from MyPlate, the nutrients their dish would give, and the food safety involved when they were preparing their dish.

The intermediate team received a Blue Ribbon, and was the Top Winner of the Intermediate Age category, which is a huge feat to accomplish.

The Senior team, received a blue ribbon.

We are extremely proud of all the hard work these teams put into the Food Challenge. Misty Morgan, for leading these teams to a successful experience at the District 12 4-H Food Challenge. A lot of hard work was put into preparing these teams for the district competition.
