GEORGE WEST – Three Live Oak County jailers were indicted Feb. 29 accused of improper sexual activity with an inmate.

The charges against Vincent Aguilar, 28, of George West, Israel Charles, Jr., 22, of Tuleta and Jaime Enrique Smith, 46, of Beeville stem from incidents reported in 2010.

According to prior information, two female inmates from Jim Wells County who were being housed in Live Oak County accused the three of sexual assault.

After the first of the women reported the assault, jail officials reviewed video surveillance from the jail cameras.

On the video they saw a jailer squatting down by the door in the hallway with his arm in the food hatch of the room housing one of the women, officials said previously. The jailer, officials said, later admitted inappropriately touching that woman through the food hatch.

The investigation continued which led to others being accused of similar crimes.

Aguilar was indicted on six counts of improper sexual activity with a person in custody. He was continued on an existing bond. He was arrested on Aug. 15, 2010, and released on a $20,000 bond.

Charles was indicted on five counts of improper sexual activity with a person in custody. He was continued on existing bond. He was arrested on Aug. 27, 2010, and released on two bonds of $10,000 each. The bonds were set by Justice of the Peace Precinct 3 Jim Lane.
