The win in the area championship advances the Lady Cats to the region quarterfinals. The S-T girls were to meet the Hitchcock Lady Bulldogs on Tuesday night in Palacios.
Friday’s contest was tight over the first few minutes but the Lady Cats went on a 16-0 run to end the second quarter to go into the locker rooms at the half with a 30-12 lead.
The second half turned into a free throw contest as the Lady ‘Horns were forced to foul to try and stop the Lady Cat offense from burning up the clock with the big lead. The S-T girls hit on almost all of their trips to the charity stripe to squelch any thoughts of a GW rally.
“Our ability to hit the free throws in the fourth quarter and our defense were the keys tonight,” said head coach Joseph Grimes III.
The outside defensive pressure shut down the Lady ‘Horns shooters for the most part and the rebounding job done by the Lady Cats prevented any second chance opportunities.
“We did a great job shutting down there outside shooters,” said Grimes.
S-T head coach Joseph Grimes II got great minutes from freshman post Amber Hughlett, who hit for five of the 16 points in that first half run that gave the Lady Cats a great cushion.
It was a balanced scoring attack as everyone contributed. Rachel Mengers led the Lady Cat scoring with 18 points. Brittany Garza followed with 11 points and ran the point well, breaking what little pressure the Lady ‘Horns attempted. D’Anne Wilder added nine points and Celina Acosta supplied seven. Jennifer Pueblo provided six and Hughlett contributed five.
