Kay Russell Sanchez-Navarro McBrayer will hold a book signing Saturday for her new cookbook, “The Cellar is in the Basement.”

McBrayer, a Beeville native who left and returned to her hometown and has since married Richard McBrayer, said, “This is my first book. I have some others in the works but this is my first one.”

The book, printed through Action Printing in Beeville, features recipes and stories from her former restaurant The Spanish Cellar Bistro in Fredericksburg.

The book signing runs from 10 a.m. until noon at Schulz and Wroten Pharmacy at 122 N. Washington St. in downtown Beeville.

In her book, McBrayer writes, “For years we tried to convince the public that if our restaurant in Fredericksburg, Texas, the Spanish Cellar Bistro, had the name ‘cellar’ that meant it was in the basement.

“We lived in a house that was over 100 years old and the cellar, which housed our restaurant, was underneath it. We learned to lock the front door and put a sign on the front porch that read, ‘The Cellar is in the basement,” directing the would-be diners to the patio entrance on the side of the house. This was after we wound up with entire families banging on our residence door wondering why we weren’t open.”

The book features recipes for enchiladas, tortilla soup, potato soup and many others.

McBrayer, who along with her then husband Louis Sanchez-Navarro, ran the restaurant until 1997. Her husband died three years later of cancer.
