It was a tough opening night for the Beeville Lady Trojan freshman and junior varsity volleyball teams on Tuesday night. Both teams were defeated in two straight sets by the visiting Yoakum Lady Bulldogs.

The freshman contest had the taller Lady Bulldogs and the A.C. Jones girls playing a tight, close game in the early few minutes, but with the score tied at 9-9, the visitors outscored the hometown ladies 16-6 the rest of the way to take a 25-15 win in the first of the best of three match.

The second game was a carbon copy of the first. The Lady Trojans kept with the Bulldogs early and were again tied at 9-9 before a similar run of points from Yoakum got the better of the Lady Trojans. The final score was 25-19 for a 2-0 win for the visitors.

“We’ve improved from our first scrimmage but we have to pick up our movement, our movement to certain spots on the floor for defense,” said freshman coach Gracy Bryce after the game. “We did play better in the second game.”

The junior varsity match had the visitors get out early and stay in front the entire match. The Lady Bulldogs jumped to a 6-1 lead in the first game and went on to a 25-16 win for a 1-0 lead in the match.

The second game carried that same script with the Lady Bulldogs running out to a 7-1 lead this time which became a 25-15 win over the Lady Trojan JV.

“We definitely have to get quicker to the ball,” said JV coach Ophelia De Los Santos. “Better serving and better communication on defense are what we’ll be working on in practice, too.”

The freshman and junior varsity girls played Friday at Tuloso-Midway with the first match scheduled at 5 p.m. for the ninth-grade teams.
