Kenedy and Runge football teams prepare for 100th season
KARNES COUNTY – For two local football teams, the beginning of the 2014 football season represents significant milestones.

When the season kicks off with first scrimmage games this Friday, it will be the 100th season for both the Kenedy Lions and the Runge Yellow Jackets.

The question of whether or not the 2014 season is the 100th for these teams was posted by a local fan on social media last week, and thanks to the magic of “crowdsourcing” it wasn’t long before someone else posted a link to a website that tracks and records the long history of high school football programs across the State of Texas.

According to info at the website, both the Kenedy and Runge High School football programs began in 1915, which makes this year’s season the 100th, and next year will mark the 100th anniversaries for both schools’ football programs.

The website also shows that Karnes City started their football program seven years later in 1922 and Falls City started with theirs in 1950.

And in case anyone is wondering how that first season went for the Lions and Jackets when it all started in 1915, the website even shows that Kenedy defeated Runge by a score of 34-0 and finished the season, 2-1, also beating Floresville but losing to Cuero.

The Yellow Jackets finished their 1915 season with a 1-2 record, beating Goliad, but losing to Kenedy and Cuero.
