A total of five seats on the Pettus Independent School District board of trustees will be up for election this November. More specifically, four at-large seats, each for a full term of four years, will be determined during the general election held on Nov. 4.

These seats will be decided by cumulative voting, whereby each voter shall be entitled to cast a total of four votes as the voter sees fit. For example, the voter may cast all four votes for one candidate or may allocate the four votes among more than one candidate. The four candidates who receive the most votes shall be elected to the respective seats.

In addition, one at-large seat, to fill the remaining two years of an unexpired term due to the resignation of the previously elected trustee, will be decided during a special election held on Nov. 4. The winning candidate for this seat shall be determined by a majority of all votes cast in the special election. For example, each voter shall be entitled to cast one vote in the special election, regardless of the number of candidates, and the candidate with the majority of votes shall be elected to that seat. The winning candidate will be entitled to serve in that office until the next regular election held in November 2016.

Early voting will begin on Monday, Oct. 20, and end on Friday, Oct. 31. All interested candidates may file for a place on the general or special election ballot with the district’s elections officer, located at the Pettus ISD Administration Office, 500 N. May St. in Pettus.

The deadline to file an application for a place on the general election ballot is Monday, Aug. 18, and the deadline to file an application for a place on the special election ballot is Thursday, Aug. 21.

A candidate must be 18 years of age, a qualified voter and a resident of Texas for one year and a resident of the school district for six months prior to the filing deadline.

See the district’s website at for further information regarding the 2014 general and special elections.
