It's official: our Fizz! Boom! Read! Summer Reading Program is over. The last books have been turned in, the final prizes chosen, and the last piece of celebratory pizza has been eaten. But that doesn't mean we're done reading.
No, it's my favorite time of year: Throwdown Time! The Runge community is really stepping up and signing up for our contest in greater numbers than ever before. That's awesome! But we want more! More readers! More teams! If you have a Runge Library Card (with no fines on it) and you are reading the books from our main room (Juvenile Fiction, Young Adult, or Adult Fiction and Non-fiction), then you can join a team. (And if you don't have a library card, get one! They're free!)
“But I'm a slow reader,” you say. Doesn't matter. Every book that you check out from us (and turn back in) will count towards your team's page totals. The past two years the margin of victory between teams has been less than 20 pages. When we say every page counts, we mean it! The winning team will get team prizes and bragging rights.
“What if no one else on my team reads? We'll never win!” It's true; that would make winning the team prize more difficult. But we have individual prizes, too. The person who reads the most pages during our contest will receive a 32-inch smart TV. Second place will get you a portable DVD player, and third place will get an iPod Shuffle (thanks to Wal-Mart #524 for help with these prizes). Who cares if the rest of your team doesn't read? Get that TV!
We like to tell our kids that reading is important. Now let's show them how fun reading can be! (And maybe get a TV!)
