Sara Camille Casas, an incoming senior at A.C. Jones High School, was selected to attend Texas Bluebonnet Girls State 2014, which was held June 15-21 at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin.
Casas was sponsored by the Beeville Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9170. The Ladies Auxiliary sponsors one young lady from A.C. Jones each year to attend this distinct program.
The program, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Texas, gives girls about to enter their senior year of high school an opportunity to learn how government works by performing the same duties as real officials do every day in government. The girls organize their own city, county and state governments and officials. They learn the duties and responsibilities of each of the offices held. They also have the opportunity to introduce and debate bills in a mock legislature.
Casas was elected floor leader during the session. Floor leaders are members of a legislative caucus elected by their colleagues to represent them in an official capacity.
Texas Girls State concluded with a visit to the State Capitol in Austin where the delegates toured and had the opportunity to visit with state officials.
Casas said, “It was an amazing opportunity to learn about our government and to make so many new friends. I encourage all incoming junior girls to apply for Girls State; it is a wonderful experience and honor to attend.”
Casas has a busy schedule for her senior year. She is president of National Honor Society, president of FFA Beeville Chapter and district treasurer of the Gateway FFA.
