VICTORIA – Richard G. Reyes of Victoria died June 5, 2014.

Reyes was born Sept. 30, 1940 in Goliad.

He attended college for two years before joining the navy, where he served active duty for four years. He was a member of the Navel Reserve for 16 years, retired as a petty officer first class and he was a third-degree knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 1329.

He retired from Union Carbide after 38 years. He was also active within Holy Trinity Church, often helping with Jamaicas and other church functions.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rose Reyes; daughter, Veronica Reyes Griego of Victoria; daughter and son-in-law, Catherine Martinez and Louis Martinez IV of Houston; grandsons, David and Stephen Valderrama, Robert Griego and Louis Martinez V; granddaughter, Erika O'Connell; five great-grandchildren; brothers, Refugio Reyes Jr. and Rey Reyes; and sister, Rosie Hernandez.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Refugio and Eva Reyes.

Visitation was held Monday, June 9 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Artero Funeral Home in Victoria. Visitation resumed at Holy Trinity/San Trisma Trinidad Church in Victoria from 5 to 9 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral mass was held Tuesday, June 10 at 9 a.m. at Holy Trinity/San Trisma Trinidad Church with Father Alonzo Serna officiating. Burial followed at Resurrection Cemetery with full military services under the auspices of Victoria County Veterans Council AL, CWV, VFW, DAV, MCL, MOWW, EX-POW,MOPH, WS, KWV.

Pallbearers were Louis Martinez IV, Louis Martinez V, Stephen Valderrama, Robert Griego, Scott O'Connell and Rick Gomez.

Honorary pallbearers were David Valderrama, Rene Reyes, Refugio Reyes Jr., Rey Reyes, Ben Gomez, Al Tristand and Jonathan Foster.

Services were under the direction of Artero Memorial Chapels, Victoria, 361-575-3212.
