BISHOP MAN KILLED IN HEAD-ON CRASH: Driver who fell asleep at the wheel sustains minor injuries

KENEDY – A Bishop man was killed and several others seriously injured in a head-on crash that happened early Monday morning at a location about 2.5 miles north of Kenedy.

According to information from the Department of Public Safety (DPS), the accident involving two vehicles happened at 6:55 a.m. on Farm-to-Market Road 792.

Robert Garza, 34, of Robstown was driving a 2012 Nissan Frontier northbound on the highway when due to a lack of sleep or possible intoxication, apparently fell asleep and struck a guardrail adjacent to the northbound lane. The pickup then crossed the highway striking another guardrail and then collided head on with a Ford F-350 that was traveling south in the southbound lane.

Garza is in stable condition at Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital.

Juan Julian Beltran, 53, of Bishop, one of four occupants of the Ford F-350, died at the scene of the accident as a result of injuries sustained in the collision. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by Karnes County Justice of the Peace David Sotelo.

Two other occupants of the Ford F-350 were seriously injured in the crash.

Benjamin Rodriguez, of Corpus Christi, is in serious condition at San Antonio Military Medical Center.

Daniel Rodriguez, of Corpus Christi, remains in serious condition at University Hospital in San Antonio.

The accident remains under investigation by DPS.
