KARNES CITY – A spill of hydrochloric acid from a truck forced the evacuation of five homes in the Karnes City area on the evening of Thursday, June 24.

According to information from the Karnes County Sheriff’s Department, the report came in at 7:05 p.m. at a location near the intersection of Farm-to-Market Road 99 west and County Road 189 about seven miles southwest of Karnes City.

Hart Trucking Company was the owner of the truck that spilled the acid due to a mechanical failure.

Five homes in the area were evacuated for about two hours as a result of the spill and concerns of possible health risks due to airborne vapors from the acid.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident, according to Sheriff Dwayne Villanueva.
