Volunteers with the Runge Chamber of Commerce and others are hard at work making final preparations for fireworks, parade, food and family fun at the patriotic event – the only one of its kind in Karnes County.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Honor our Vets.”
The celebration begins with a flag raising ceremony at 8:30 a.m. at the Runge VFW Hall and grounds located at 211 Aransas Street in Runge. Vendors will open at 9 a.m. and offer a wide variety of items to visitors throughout the day till closing at 9 p.m.
A rifle shooting contest is planned for 9 a.m. to noon.
A car show is planned with judging of the car show set for 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
A horseshoe tournament is set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Children’s bounce house will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A barbecue chicken lunch is planned for 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The United States Air Force Band of the West will provide musical entertainment from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
A “Wall of Honor” will be on display recognizing the service of veterans.
The Runge Independence Day Parade will begin at 6 p.m. at the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church on Helena Street (Farm-to-Market 81) and continue south along Helena Street through downtown Runge. Awards will be presented for best theme float, best float “chamber’s choice,” best out of town float, best car, best tractor, best commercial vehicle, best equestrian entry and best music-dance-band entry.
Raffle tickets will be sold all dat and the raffle drawing is set for 7:30 p.m.
Fireworks will cap off the day-long celebration at 9:30 p.m. near the baseball field adjacent to the VFW Hall grounds. Past fireworks shows have been spectacular and have drawn hundreds of visitors to watch the fireworks light up the night sky while patriotic music accompanies the show.
