BEEVILLE – “Unless we get some rain, it’s just going to get worse,” Beeville Volunteer Fire Chief Donnie Morris said Thursday morning.

Members of the Beeville Department had been helping the Skidmore Volunteer Fire Department and others in the south end of the county since shortly after 10 o’clock that morning in extinguishing small grass fires along U.S. Highway 181.

Firefighters were unable to find some of the reported fires both north and south of Skidmore. Others were put out in a few minutes.

Morris speculated that the fires might have been started by a truck that had a flat tire that had heated up and was throwing pieces of hot rubber into grass on the side of the highway.

By 11:15 a.m., firefighters apparently had found and extinguished the last of the fires.

The summer months are some of the most active for all fire departments in Bee County.
