TIVOLI – An Austin man was killed in a one-vehicle rollover Friday afternoon, June 13.

Texas Department of Public Safety Cpl. Charlie Ramirez said the accident occurred at 2:17 p.m. and involved a 1993 Ford Ranger, traveling in the southbound lane of state Highway 35 about four miles south of Tivoli.

Erasto Salazar Rangel, 49, of Austin, died after his Ford lost its thread, causing the car to lose control and leave the roadway.

The vehicle rolled several times before coming to rest on its roof and facing southeast.

Rangel was killed in the rollover, and his 14-year-old passenger, Benifacio Ortiz, sustained injuries.

HALO-Flight transported Ortiz to Corpus Christi Spohn Memorial Hospital. Ortiz had lacerations to his lip and other injuries.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

The driver and passenger were wearing seat belts, according to Ramirez. The speed limit on state Highway 35 is 75 mph.

In addition to two DPS troopers, medics, the Refugio Fire Department and Refugio County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene.
