Jack Ronald Johnston, 78, of Beeville, died at his home Thursday, June 12, 2014.

Mr. Johnston was born Dec. 22, 1935, in Waco to Richard F. and Erma Lee Johnston. He joined the Marine Corps in 1952 and spent the Korean War in 29 Palms, California and Oahu, Hawaii. After his enlistment, he moved to Phoenix, Arizona where he settled for 27 years raising a family and working for several employers including the Bureau of Reclamation and Pacific Motor Trucking.

In 1985, he moved to Houston and worked for Piggyback Services. They transferred him to New Orleans, Louisiana, and then for several years to Portsmouth, Virginia, as terminal manager. He retired in 1994 and traveled the country for two years. After several years in San Benito, he moved to Beeville.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Bill; a daughter, Rebecca; and a granddaughter, Catherine.

Survivors include his wife, Karen; three brothers, Don Johnston of Phoenix, Arizona, Bob (Mary Lamance) Johnston of Mineral Wells and Dick Johnston of Tyler; children, Jack Jr., Greg, Leanna, Karen Johnston and Debra Follette, all of Phoenix, Arizona, and Mary Vanderveer of Evansville, Indiana; 15 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren; step-sons, John Adamo of Pittsburgh, Dale Adamo of Albion, New York; six step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Burial was held Friday, June 20, at 10:45 a.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
