Kowalik, a transfer from Hallettsville, helped the Tigers win three of four games at Saturday’s Texas Sharks Division II 7-on-7 football state-qualifying tournament and capture a spot in the state tournament July 10 and 11 at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex in College Station.
The Tigers defeated the Edna Cowboys 32-7 in Saturday’s semifinals at Shark Stadium to secure a state tournament berth along with the Cuero Gobblers, who beat the Needville Bluejays 33-7 in the other semifinal.
The top two teams in the seven-team tournament qualified for the state tournament. Goliad and Cuero elected not to play in the
championship game to avoid possible injuries.
“We were all excited about coming and this was one of our goals this week,” Kowalik said. “We were just coming out here to compete and get better. We wanted come out here and have fun.”
Goliad started the tournament with a 28-27 victory over Yoakum in pool play. The Tigers fell 40-21 to Cuero before qualifying for the semifinals with a 34-12 win over the Wharton Tigers.
This was the first 7-on-7 state-qualifying tournament appearance for Goliad.
“We just tried to come out here and play hard,” said Akil Ellis, who had two key interceptions in the win over Edna.
