Man dies from injuries in crash near Helena

KARNES COUNTY – A Vidor Texas man died as a results of injuries sustained in a rear-end crash Tuesday, June 10, on State Highway 80, according to information from DPS.

Police say James David Johnson, 57, was driving a 1996 Toyota Tacoma at 1:02 p.m. in the northbound lane of the highway at a location about .7 miles south of Helena when he failed to notice traffic ahead of him was slowing to a stop due to construction in the area.

The pickup crashed into the back end of an 18-wheeler that was coming to a stop in the northbound lane. The pickup applied its brakes but crashed into the truck at a high rate of speed.

The driver of the 18-wheeler, Nicholas Koster, 30, of Corpus Christi was not injured.

Johnson, who was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, was transported by EMS to Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 2:39 p.m. by Justice of the Peace David Sotelo.
