On Thursday, April 17 members of the Karnes City Home and Garden Club traveled to Beeville and toured the beautiful home and garden of Dennis and Gwen DeWitt. Gwen DeWitt is a Texas Master Gardener and she is an offer for this organization. Gwen also prepares gardening news articles for the Texas Home and Garden Club.
Mrs. Dewitt’s gardens are primarily established under three giant oak trees. The gardens are complimented with many plants she has purchased from many nurseries. We were treated to highlights of her many attractive and colorful orchids placed out especially for us to see and given a chance to view her green house as well with a unique rain barrel with many hoses connected to it and placed to drain into many other barrels for use for her lovely plants. She also spoke of the need to always have a lot of plush compost nearby to treat her plants form time to time.
The members also enjoyed a meal at the Beeville City Diner after which Mrs. DeWitt led us to another charming garden located in the center of Beeville, the Butterfly Garden. We ended the trip by shopping at several downtown businesses.
The members look forward to the Annual Luncheon to be held Thursday, May 15 at 11 a.m. at Barth’s Restaurant. Many nice door prizes will be given and the installation of new officers will be held.
Garden tip: To keep your house plants healthy: once a month, dissolve in a cup a weak tea one aspirin and dose the plant with it.
