George West High School is proud to announce the following Region IV Class 2A UIL Academic meet winners: Whitley James placed first in Feature Writing. Hitesh Patel placed second in Calculator Applications. Megan Hardwick placed fourth in Accounting, and Marcus Miller tied for fourth in Calculator Applications but lost the tie-breaker and finished 8th. James and Patel qualified for the State UIL Academic meet to be held in Austin at the end of May.

The meet was held at Texas State University. The day before the meet, (Monday, April 24) 12 students and four coaches left George West High School headed to San Marcos. Students enjoyed a few hours of relaxation at the outlet mall before buckling down and preparing for the next day’s events. The Ready Writers, Prose & Poetry Interpreters, and Calculator boys were up bright and early Saturday morning ready for their events. While the rest of the speech team, journalism team and accounting team arrived on campus a little later. The students enjoyed lunch at Grin’s, a San Marcos tradition, and strolling around the campus.

The Regional UIL meet was a wonderful experience for all competitors especially those who had not attended before. The competition was fierce and inspired all underclassmen to work hard to get back to San Marcos next year! Coaches attending this year’s Regional meet were: Judy Hudek, Informative and Persuasive Speaking; Diane Johnson, Prose and Poetry Interpretation; Flo Moore, Ready Writing and Accounting; and Ted Troell, Calculator Applications.
