Editor:

Many years ago, I was introduced to a dance called the “Hokey Pokey.” On Thursday, April 10, I was introduced to a takeoff on the ridiculous dance best identified as the “Hanky Panky.”

The special meeting of the Goliad County Commissioners Court was convened with an audience of approximately 100 interested and concerned citizens. What followed is amazing to say the least and considerably worse if thoughtfully considered.

Without explanation, the elected county attorney along with the attending citizens were excluded from the executive (secret) session. The members of the commissioners court then retired to another location for their secret session. Neither at the beginning or end of the extended executive session were citizens remarks invited or allowed by the presiding county judge. Neither was any explanation offered for the lack of concern for those citizens who had given their valuable time to participate in the governance of their county. The citizens were required to wait over three hours before the court members returned.

This demonstrated lack of leadership and an absence of a “public servant” mentality unfortunately has permeated all levels of government. It is unfortunate and possibly tragic that it is now evidenced in Goliad county commissioners court.

John Caldwell,

Goliad
