KARNES COUNTY – A Runge man was severely injured when a part from a passing truck fell off the truck, crashing through the windshield and striking him in the head.

The accident happened around 4 p.m. on March 30 on State Highway 72 at a location between Kenedy and Runge, according to information from DPS.

Juan Soto, 41, of Runge, was in the passenger seat of a Chevrolet Silverado pickup that his father was driving eastbound on the highway when a piece of the suspension from a passing 18-wheeler that was traveling westbound, came loose and crashed through the windshield on the passenger side of the pickup striking Soto in the face, causing a life-threatening injury to the man.

Soto was transported to a hospital in San Antonio for treatment to serious injuries sustained in the accident.

Family members said Soto is in a coma, he has brain trauma and one side of his face is crushed.

The truck driver was probably not aware of what occurred and did not stop at the scene, according to information from DPS.

The accident remains under investigation. DPS strongly encourages anyone with information about the accident, or information regarding the identity of the truck driver, to call the DPS office in Karnes City at 830-780-2121.
