Seniors lead the way for the 2014 Kenedy Leopards Softball team as they go 1 and 1 during their first week of the young season. On Thursday night, the Leopards lost to Poth 21-9. However, the score was not indicative of how Coach Hinojosa’s Seniors played. “We are a very young team with only 3 Seniors playing key positions. We are going to struggle for awhile until the underclassmen adjust to the speed of varsity play.” The leopards had no problem hitting the ball as they out hit Poth 18-14. Kenedy was paced by Seniors, Emily Richter, catcher who went 4 for 5 with 3 stolen bases, Teryn Schmidt, third baseman went 2 for 4 with an RBI and Laurel Vickery, center fielder, had 4 RBIs with a double while going 2 for 5 from the plate. It was the twelve errors by the leopards that lead to 15 unearned runs for the Piratettes.

The Leopards traveled to San Antonio on Friday afternoon to take on Cornerstone Christian Academy and picked up their first win on the young season. Kenedy beat Cornerstone by the score of 22-7 invoking the 15 run mercy rule after 3 innings. Walks were the key to the game as Kenedy gave up 7 BB while Cornerstone pitchers had 13 free passes. The Leopard pitching staff tightened up a little bit by getting 6 out of the 9 outs by strike outs. Zapata go the win to go to 1 - 1 on the season as newcomer Jennifer Zalazny, Jr., saw some pitching time in the 3rd inning. “Our pitchers were a little more consistant today than they were last night. Again, we are young and we are going to have games were they pitch well and some games were they don’t.” Coach Hinojosa stated. Richter lead the way at the plate going 2 for 3 with a BB, RBI single and two stolen bases. Zapata helped herself at the plate going two for three with 2 RBIs and scored two runs. Teryn Schmidt went 1 for 1 but had three walks and 3 RBIs.

The Leopards travel to Huber Ranch, Seguin,on Tuesday to take on Georgetown Gateway in a non-district competition starting at 6 pm.
