GOLIAD – The Goliad Tigers defeated the La Vernia Bears 53-29 Saturday to win the Goliad Tiger Holiday Classic at the Goliad Events Center.

Carl Roy led the way for Goliad (12-2) with 13 points and Dalton Sturm added 11.

The Tigers defeated the Poth Pirates 48-40 in Saturday’s semifinals. Sturm had 13 points while Alfred Ortiz added 11 and Tangle Johnson had 10.

Sturm, who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, poured in 26 points in a 72-55 win over the Yorktown Wildcats in Friday’s quarterfinals. Johnson followed with 17 and Ortiz had 11.

In Thursday’s pool play, Goliad rolled past Yoakum 70-46 as Sturm scored 21 points, Roy had 15 and Ortiz added 13. The Tigers downed Banquete 78-37 to open the tournament behind Sturm’s 19 points, Johnson’s 14 and Desmond Perry’s 11.

Goliad defeated Luling 74-62 Friday behind Sturm’s 32 points, Ortiz’s 16 and Johnson’s 11.

Named to the all-tournament were Ortiz, Johnson, La Vernia’s Colby Sims and Austin Pickens, Poth’s Kylor Felux and Dylan Sefcik, Ingleside’s Montell Lewis and Luling’s Josh Alvarez.
