Both teams had trouble finding the basket over the first few minutes. The Rebels led 19-8 with 12 minutes already gone in the first half.
The Hill JC ladies managed to add another 17 points over the final eight minutes to take a 37-17 lead at the half. An’Jonae Woodson led the Cougars with five points in the first half while Brianna Williams added another four points to the CBC totals.
The second half was much the same. Neither team burned up the nets. The Rebels hit for 31 second half markers while holding the CBC women to 20. The final went to the visitors 67-37.
Williams finished with 10 points to top the CBC scoring. Woodson followed closely with nine. Jasmine Gomez hit two long-range jumpers in the second half and a couple of free throws to chip in eight points for the Cougars.
“Last night we stepped up our defense and held Hill to under 70 points. They have been averaging over 75 points and hold a 7-1 record coming into the contest,” said CBC head coach April Bruene.
“But the defensive effort did not translate into points for us tonight.”
The Cougar women traveled to Eunice, La., over the weekend to meet LSU-Eunice on Saturday. On Thursday, the CBC women will be in Victoria to meet the Victoria College ladies. The Cougars’ next home game is set for next Saturday when the LSU-Eunice squad pays a visit to Beeville for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
