The Beeville Toys for Tots program is underway, preparing to make Christmas happier for many less fortunate children in Bee County, announced Kay Past, coordinator for the local organization, affiliated with the national Marine Corps Reserve TFT.

Registration for the program began Monday and continues through Wednesday, Nov. 27, from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, at the Vineyard, 210 N. Monroe St. Each registered family will be assigned a date and time to shop for toys and books for their children, from Dec. 2-20.

Parents of children from infants to age 17 who reside in this county are eligible to sign up for a shopping date if they meet the Beeville Vineyard’s guidelines for assistance. They should bring Social Security cards for each child.

“Toys for Tots will give toys and books to the children, and the Vineyard Christmas Angels will provide a bag of fruit and candy canes and another of shampoo, soap and deodorant for each family,” explained Lupe Sánchez, director of the Beeville Vineyard and assistant coordinator of the local TFT program.

Past and Sánchez request the community’s assistance in making this year’s program a success.

“We’ll begin putting toy and book collection boxes in local stores, churches, schools and offices at the beginning of November,” Past said. “Anyone who did not have a box last year who wants one this year may call me at 358-6717 or e-mail me at”

“We’re asking churches and individuals to provide the apples, oranges, candy canes and personal items for the families,” Sánchez said. “Food donations will also be welcomed.”

In order to make all these items available to needy families for this Christmas, food and toiletries donations are needed by Dec. 6. Toy and book collection boxes will be picked up Dec. 12. Any items brought to the Vineyard after these dates will be stored for next year, as the Vineyard will close for the holidays Dec. 20.

Volunteers are needed to help collect toys, books and other items and also to wrap gifts and assist the families when they come to shop. Those who would like to help may contact the Vineyard at 358-7500 or Past at 358-6717.

For those short of volunteer time who wish to help, donations may be made to the local TFT program at by clicking on “Texas” and “Bee County.” Christmas Angels donations may be sent directly to the Vineyard at 210 N. Monroe St.
