GOLIAD – The Goliad Tigers will be well-rested when they head into a crucial three-game portion of their schedule Friday night.

The Tigers, who are 5-1 overall and share the lead in District 15-2A Division I with a 2-0 mark, and face the three teams they will be vying with for the district’s postseason berths.

Goliad will travel Friday to face Jourdanton, which is 3-0 in district play and 6-1 overall. The kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

“We’ve been working on fundamentals,” Mares said of the bye week.

“When you get a week off, you go back and look at game films and see what you need to improve on.”

Mares said he hasn’t had to use too motivational speeches for the Tigers to realize the importance of their next three games.

“Everybody knows the next three ball games are against top-rated teams,” Mares said. “We just have to take them one at a time and go with it.”

Mares is still spread playing time around and get comfortable with players specializing on one side of the ball.

“We’ve been working on that all along,” Mares said. “We’re getting close. We still have kids that go both ways, but the other kids have stepped up. The ultimate goal is to get 11 on and 11 off. But we know there will be times when you need different ones in there.”

Marion (4-2, 2-0) is the other unbeaten team in district play. The Bulldogs will host George West (1-6, 0-3) on Friday.

The district’s other game will have San Antonio Cole (1-5, 0-2) traveling to Luling (6-1, 2-1). San Antonio Brooks (0-7, 0-3) is off this week.

Goliad will host Luling on Oct. 25 and travel to Marion on Nov. 1. The Tigers will close the regular season Nov. 8 at home against Brooks.
