The accident occurred at about 4:40 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16.
The 19-year-old woman and her 3-year-old male passenger were taken to different hospitals with minor injuries.
Traffic in the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 77 was backed up for about 25 minutes while emergency crews moved the accident victims to an ambulance and swept off debris from the highway.
The 19-year-old woman was transported to Corpus Christi Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.
Kaiser said the woman sustained some broken bones.
Her 3-year-old was taken to Driscoll Children’s Hospital with no reported injuries.
Kaiser said the cause of the accident was “failure to control speed” by the driver of the Nissan. The driver will be cited.
The Willco Services 18-wheeler out of Refugio sustained damage to its rear tires.
The 34-year-old truck driver had no injuries.
Both the Nissan and the 18-wheeler were traveling south in the right-hand lane on U.S. Highway 77 a little more than a mile north of Refugio where the speed limit is 75 mph.
In addition to DPS, the Refugio Volunteer Fire Department, Refugio County Sheriff’s Office, Refugio Police Department and EMS were at the scene.
