BEEVILLE – The Coastal Bend College Cougars have two new sports this year, but those won’t get started until October or later. For the fall season, women’s volleyball and men’s soccer take center stage.

The volleyball team begins play on Aug. 29 with a home match with Cisco Junior College at 2 p.m.

Head coach Larry Lollar has a handful of returning players but will have to rely on their athleticism and not their height this year.

“We aren’t very tall this year, but we do have some athletes,” said Lollar at a early practice session.

With a few newcomers and a few experienced players, such as Kathy Acosta and Korie Rodriguez, the Cougar volleyball team will compete within their region. But, it will be tough to meet those junior colleges who will have a few six-footers who are also athletic and play big at the net.

Men’s soccer looks to be a more experienced and talented group than last year.

“This is the best talent we’ve had here, and we should be far more competitive,” said head coach Bill Cleavelin.

Three imports from the British Isles have joined the team this year and will be joined by a very good group of newcomers. Speed, experience and some depth in numbers will help the Cougars challenge for a post season tournament spot in Region XIV.

The Cougars begin their regular season on the road on Aug. 23 at the University of Dallas. Their first home match is set for Sept. 13 when Jacksonville Junior College pays a visit to Beeville.
