My folks used to go on visits every other Thursday night to different couples on a rotating basis. We kids were told to go out and play and to stay there until called for refreshments while the adults talked.
Pastor Randy mentioned in his sermon the other Sunday that this custom has all but disappeared because we have so many more ways to communicate these days. I think visits were once made to relay information to your friends that you just couldn’t do over the phone because of those old party lines people used to have where five or six people could listen in to your business, and often did. Am I dating myself?
Now the young people have their phones attached to their fingers and not only do they not know how to “visit,” they are losing the ability to talk to each other. Have you seen that commercial where the two people are out eating on a date and they are texting each other their “conversation” while sitting across the table from each other? It is sad and a little disturbing.
I think most of us have also lost the desire to leave our houses once we are home. We’ve gotten into comfortable clothes and we just want to stay on the couch in front of the TV and just “chill,” as the saying used to be. Plus, if people come over, there is that unspoken rule that your house must be in some sort of order and that just adds more reasons to hibernate.
But I still long for that social connection of visiting with your friends one-on-one and not through e-mails or texts. Come fall, I just might try to start having people over for visits, so start thinking up excuses now as to why you can’t make it and have them ready when I call.

Spinach-Cream Cheese Sandwiches
(From Joyce Baecker of Goliad. I couldn’t stop eating these even though I’ve given up bread. They would be great for a bridal or baby shower or an afternoon ladies tea.)
• 2 8-oz. pkgs. cream cheese, room temperature
• 2-3 stalks celery, finely chopped
• 2-3 green onions, finely chopped
• fresh spinach (about 2/3 of a 10- oz. bag)
• pickled jalapenos, finely chopped (to taste)
• garlic powder (to taste)
• 1 loaf sandwich bread
• Miracle Whip
• Put all the vegetables in a food processor to finely chop.
• Add vegetables to the softened cream cheese.
• Season with garlic powder and add jalapenos, if using.
• Spread bread slices with Miracle Whip and then add spinach filling.
• Remove crusts and cut into finger sandwiches.
• Refrigerate until ready to serve.
Apple Pie Enchiladas
(From Alpha Hunt of Goliad. Bil really, really liked these and this is much easier than making him an apple pie.)
• 1 21-oz. can apple pie filling
• 6 8-inch flour tortillas
• 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
• ½ cup butter
• ½ cup white sugar
• ½ cup brown sugar
• ½ cup water
• Place one heaping quarter of a cup of pie filling down the center of each tortilla.
• Sprinkle with cinnamon.
• Roll up and place them, seam side down, in a buttered dish.
• In a saucepan, combine butter, both sugars, and water.
• Bring to a boil over medium heat.
• Reduce heat and simmer 3 minutes.
• Pour sauce over the enchiladas.
• Let stand 45 minutes.
• Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 20 minutes.
• Cut enchiladas in half before serving warm or at room temperature.
Cook’s note: These are good with a bit of vanilla ice cream on top.
