REFUGIO – The first large strips of Astro Turf were laid out on the field at Jack Sportsman Bobcat Stadium on Thursday, July 25.

The $870,000 turf project, including engineering and stabilization, is expected to be finished in time for Refugio’s first game against Ingleside on Aug. 30, according to coach Jason Herring.

The project was approved by the Refugio school board on May 20. Burnside Services Inc. of Navasota was hired to do the construction.

PBK Sports was the engineer for the project.

“It will for sure be ready by the first game,” Herring said.

He said the first practice won’t be on the new turf.

A short delay resulted after eight rolls of turf was discovered to have the wrong color for roots. The rolls were sent back to be replaced.

Herring added that the synthetic turf will be completed by the end of next week, and in another two weeks, the track will be finished.

“The first game ought to be really special for fans and the kids,” Herring said.
